About Rio Maior

Rio Maior is a municipality in the Portuguese district of Santarém. The population in 2011 was 24,03, in an area of 226.99 km². The city itself had a population of 8,725 in 2001. It is located north-northeast of Lisbon. The municipality is crossed by the Rio Maior, a tributary of the Tagus River. The present mayor is Jorge Riso, elected by the Socialist Party. The municipal holiday is June 13. Rio Maior was once an important center for the Portuguese cork industry. Today, the municipality is still home to many cork processing companies. Cork is used in wine stoppers, flooring, and a variety of other products. Rio Maior is also home to a ceramic tile factory, which produces tiles for both the Portuguese and export markets. The municipality is served by a terminal of the Santarém District Railway.
